3 More Reasons to Avoid GMOs
By now you already known that genetically modified foods, or GMOs, are bad for us. Animal studies have shown that GMOs lead to organ damage and immune system disorders, infertility and accelerated aging, and human studies have shown that these foods can leave material behind in our bodies that can cause long-term health problems.
For example, genes inserted into GM soy can transfer into the DNA of bacteria that lives inside our bodies and that the insecticide produced by GM corn has been found in the bloodstream of pregnant women AND their unborn fetuses. Since the introduction of GMOs in 1996, chronic illnesses such as food allergies, reproductive disorders and digestive problems have been on the rise, and the American Public Health Association and American Nurses Association have publicly condemned the use of GM bovine growth hormone, because the milk from treated cows contains the hormone IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) which is linked to cancer.
As if this wasn’t enough reason to stay away from GMOs, here are 3 others reasons why we should all avoid them:
GMOs Increase the Need for Herbicide Use
Most GM crops have been engineered to be “herbicide tolerant.” For instance Monsanto sells Roundup Ready crops, which have been designed to survive applications of their Roundup herbicide.
What does this mean? It means that farmers now have to spray even more herbicides on GMO crops. Between 1996 and 2008, farmers in this country sprayed an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on GMOs, and this overuse of herbicides like Roundup results in “superweeds,” resistant to the herbicide. This means every single year farmers have to use more and more toxic herbicides, which not only wreaks havoc on the environment, but these newer toxic herbicide residues also get left behind of the GMO food and wind up in our bodies. Roundup has been linked to hormonal disruptions, birth defects and cancer.
GMOs are Killing the Environment
GMOs are not only bad for our health but also the health of our planet. These crops and their associated herbicide are doing major damage to our beautiful birds, insects, amphibians, marine ecosystems and soil organisms. They pollute our waters and reduce bio-diversity. Did you know the monarch butterfly population is down 50%? That’s because GMO crops are eliminating their habitat. These horror stories are endless.
GMOs are Not helping to Feed the Planet
The powers behind the push for GMO foods continually lie to us and tell us that these crops increase yields, but they do not. Sustainable non-GMO agricultural methods that have been used in developing countries have been shown to yield increases as much as 79% and even higher. Again, GMOs do not increase yields at all as was evidenced in the Union of Concerned Scientists’ 2009 report “Failure to Yield―the definitive study to date on GM crops and yield.”
There are, sadly, many more reasons why we should all be taking a stand against the GMO movement, but frankly I can’t stomach listing any more.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) today said it will appeal an April 27 federal court ruling denying the organization’s motion to halt implementation of Vermont’s mandatory GMO labeling law pending further litigation. READ MORE
This is a statement from GMA’s website:
Based in Washington, D.C., the Grocery Manufacturers Association is the voice of more than 300 leading food, beverage and consumer product companies that sustain and enhance the quality of life for hundreds of millions of people in the United States and around the globe.

The food, beverage and consumer packaged goods industry in the United States generates sales of $2.1 trillion annually, employs 14 million workers and contributes $1 trillion in added value to the economy every year.
Pamela G. Bailey, CEO, calls it pseudo-science and web-fed hysteria. I wonder what Ms. Bailey feeds her family.
Do you think GMA (Grocer’s Manufacturing Association) is a trusted source of information that helps members produce safe products?
If not, what is the solution?
