Good morning lovely you and welcome to Wellness Wednesday!

Stop…SAVELOYS… not so glorious! NO WAY JOSE!! If you don’t know what saveloys are, they are a highly seasoned baby sausage, usually bright red, customarily boiled and made out of pigs brains.

When I was a young girl, my mother and I would visit the butcher on Friday and every Friday the butcher would hand me a pink baby saveloy. I loved the salty taste. I had no idea what they were made from. I’m wondering if you can still get them in butchers shops in New Zealand and Australia today.

When I was struggling with cancer and had returned to Perth, Australia, from a clinic in Mexico, I wasn’t happy with the food choices the Mexican clinic offered. I believed there had to be more I needed to do. I was searching for cancer fighting foods.

At a cancer support group in Perth, Australia, I met this woman who had recovered from stage 4 liver cancer. She spoke about eating all raw foods and how it saved her life. I was impressed because this woman was in her late 70’s and still going strong 30 years later. I wanted to know how she did it.

Was this finally going to be the answer I was looking for – Cancer Fighting Foods.

It was the middle of summer, February, in Australia and as hot as heck. I’m talking 40 celsius – 104 Fahrenheit when I ventured out on a 2-hour trek on back dirt roads to the whoops whoops (the middle of nowhere) to find this cancer-free woman. When I arrived at her ranch, she weighed, measured me, and checked my pH levels. She spoke to me like I was entering a Marine boot camp. Jeez, she was kind of scary.

I was told I needed to be on a calorie restricted diet of all raw veggies, sprouts, and juices – one avocado a day and 12 raw almonds. “Really? That’s all I can eat,” I said? I told her I didn’t think I could do it because there was very little food and I would waste away to nothing. Well, maybe I shouldn’t have said that because she went on a tirade. “You will die if you don’t. You’ve been given a wake-up call young lady of the highest magnitude and been given 6 months to live. You don’t have a choice. Do you want to die? If you want to die just get out of here now. I can’t help you,” she yelled. “This raw diet will reverse your situation in 2 years,” she said. “Two years,” I replied despairingly. “How am I going to stay on this diet for 2 years? ” I’ll waste away to nothing I thought to myself.

“See you back here next week – same time – the same place if you want to live,” she yelled out as I was heading to my car mumbling profanities under my breath. This so-called sweet lady I met at the cancer support group wasn’t sweet at all. I named her Ms. Battle Axe.

I got in my car and headed out for the long hot journey home and had to pull the car over because I was crying so much I couldn’t see to drive. Ms. Battle Axe scared me out of my friggin mind. It was a double-edged sword. I was afraid to do the diet and scared not to do it.

After a few days of thinking and meditating about it. I decided I’d give it one week and see how I felt. It didn’t take long before I started feeling better. My energy went through the roof.

Off I went on my two-hour dirt road trek again out to see Ms. Battle Axe in the sweltering heat. She weighed me – measured me and did my pH test. The first thing she said was, “Not good enough, Prue. You haven’t been strict enough.” OMG, who is this bitch I thought to myself. Give me a break. I’m learning how to change my whole life. Ms. Battle Axe basically kicked me out and told me to come back next week, but only if I had stuck to the program, 100% otherwise don’t bother coming back at all.

I cried all the way home.

On the third visit. Ms. Battle Axe actually had a slight smile on her face. “There is a method to my madness young lady,” she said. “You, needed to be told a thing or two to make you wake up and save your life.” I soon got into my new way of eating and my new lifestyle – my body loved it. I lost quite a bit of weight which was Okay for my height, and then things stabilized. I’m proud to say, I made the 2-year mark without cheating! I even stayed on the program longer and added in a few cheating foods over time.

In my 3rd year, I heard those incredible words from my doctor, “You are in remission, Prue.” That was a miraculous day I will never forget.

I’m very grateful to Ms. Battle Axe because she helped this stubborn young woman wake up and change her diet to heal her life!!

This was 3 decades ago and Ms. Battle Axe was unique. I hadn’t met anyone who had saved their life eating a calorie restricted diet with anti-inflammatory foods. She cured her cancer. Let’s get RAW with a Ms. Battle Axe salad!

Garden Crunch Salad Kale and lettuce mix

2 or 3 broccoli florets and peeled stalks

2 or 3 cauliflower florets

2 celery sticks (finely chopped)

4 radishes chopped

1 green pepper cut into thin strips watercress sprouts – your choice (homemade – recipe below)

1/2 Avocado

Place the lettuce leaves torn into bite-sized pieces or shred. Chop and de-stem the kale and add into a big bowl. Prepare the veggies and add them in layers into the bowl – chopped broccoli, cauliflower, celery, radishes, green peppers, and watercress. Slice the avocado and place it on top of the salad. Dress it up with the following dressing and toss.

Garlic Dressing: 1 cup of lemon juice, 1 tsp Kelp, 1 tsp dry basil or fresh basil, 1 shallot, finely chopped, 1 tsp fresh parsley, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed Avocado in the dressing or on the salad (optional) Water (optional) Blend ingredients together.

Top with sprouts. Sprinkle paprika and 12 almonds on top! Done.
